Page 79 of Family Man now online!
I can't tell if Lucien is oblivious to that dirty look, or cheerfully ignoring it. But then, that's the quandary with Lucien in general - is he really that way, or does he just find it pleasant to act like it?
Also, I'd like you all to think very hard about where on his person he could've been hiding that book.
And meanwhile, proof that The Chick Is Alright.
The Stumptown Comics Fest, incidentally, was great - thanks so much to everybody who stopped by the table to buy stuff and chat! You're all terribly charming, and clearly have excellent taste.
Speaking of which, I'll have leftover t-shirts and pendants and minis up for sale in the next few days (if I can get my bank to cooperate).
At the behest of friends, I produced a couple of portrait pendants for the show, two of Luther, two of Lucien, and sold one of each, to my immense delight. As soon as I get my store running, I'll make sure to point them out in an update, in case anybody desires their very own bemused, cameo-sized continental theologian.

I now officially have a crush on Ariana
*beautiful* comic beat in that last panel.Or, really between the two last panels, if you wanna get all technical...

Re: I now officially have a crush on Ariana
I enjoyed imagining the sonic "snap!" as she whips her hand back at the last instant. Poor kid.October 3 2007, 17:11:32 UTC 4 years ago
b) Wonderfully drawn, as always. I just noticed that your word balloons seem to overlap the drawing on a separate layer yet allow the drawing to show through in a faded way. I might steal that for my own comics. You can cry shenanigans all you want.

b) I'm definitely not the only one who does the translucent thing, but I think I'm the only one weird enough to hand-draw the letters and word balloons in the original art, then tone in the missing parts of background enclosed in the balloons, and THEN apply an 80% opacity fill over it in another layer.
To me it keeps the word balloons feeling like part of the art, rather than something digitally slapped on top, but also makes them visually distinct and less "solid" feeling than the other elements of the page.
Steal away. No shenanigans will be cried.

b) I have been thinking about applying lettering as a separate layer, either in PS or in Illo. Like you I hand letter right in the durn artwork. I keep thinking if I do them separately it might free me up composition-wise. It seems to work for people like Steve Lieber, that swell guy.
Excuse my toon-nerding.

CHURCHLIBRARY.b) I really like hand-lettering, although I think it's kind of a luxury - I'll keep doing it for Family Man, but for other projects I now have a Jenn-produced font of my script that works well.
My experience with Click was that it was really nice to play with panels without worrying about where the balloon would be dumped, and the originals sure are pretty, but I didn't like the final look as well - something about the Illustrator balloon lines just seems chilly, and I always end up using MORE spacing in the panel with digital lettering than I do by hand.
My Family Man word balloons are irregularly shaped so that I can make them as trim and subservient to the composition as possible.
And Jenn's word balloons are the only digital ones that I think really look good and natural to the artwork.

'Where on his person he could've been hiding that book'
Hmm.. "Nothing up my sleeve! Nothing up my sleeve! Nothing down my--"Wait, he wouldn't be wearing a codpiece, would he?
Behind the cravat, perhaps?
In the second panel, it looks like he is taking something from his boot? ^_^
I totally want a Luther pendant. Is it younger Luther or older Luther?
Love how the book-gasm wipes the doubtful look off her face. Right there she is half a second away from running out of the library to scrub off her hands about ten times at light speed, then rush back and grab the book before the boys can get in two blinks.

Re: 'Where on his person he could've been hiding that book'
There are several viable candidates in that list! Maybe I'll open it up to a poll. It's a young Luther pendant, although doing a Bite Me! Luther pendant would be damnably entertaining. I'll have to work on that one.

I think that cheery obliviousness is Lucien's best defense.

It was more a question of having the right English words at hand than thinking hard for a few days
"Also, I'd like you all to think very hard about where on his person he could've been hiding that book."He's tucked it tight under his belt, in the front or back, like I've often done in the past.
