My parents and I went to see Lord of the Rings today (they for the first time, I for the second). My mother cried and went "yessss!" at certain dramatic points; my father did not get nauseated during the swooshy sequences, and grumbled appreciatively about Eowyn; in short, it was a very successful outing.

After getting home, my father whipped up a sign which he posted on our back door, in anticipation of family friends coming over.

It reads:

ARAGORN FOR PRESIDENT '04

"It’s time for humans to regain control of earth"

...I love my family.

(my dad was pushing for Eowyn as VP, commenting that "it's time for a split bill again" and suggesting that Gandalf would be a good Secretary of State.)

Yeah, and Legolas would make a great First Lady, while Treebeard could be Speaker of the House...

Yeah, i know. And of course, there's also the Ministry of Pushing Weak-Willed Humans Into Volcanoes to be dealt with.

*cough cough*

what she said.

(Ironically, they follow a line of discussion between myself and a friend in gym class the other day. We sat down, looked at each other, and I went " Viggo should be our president. He I trust with leadership...even if it's reluctant." To which she replied, " Does this mean the State of the Union is given with a three-piece suit, Aragorn hair, and a broadsword on the table?")

All hail da' King.

I must have that poster.

I don't know about Gandalf as Secretary of State, especially what with his responsibility-shirking. "Fellowship? In trouble? Oops, gotta go"

But he was rushing off to help somebody else out there. Everybody knows who he is and has their own name for him. He's an international kinda guy, he'd be good at schmoozing foreign powers.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M TALKING ABOUT THIS SERIOUSLY.

Poster?!
Heck, I'd WEAR that on a t-shirt on a regular basis until November.
Problem is, the people who see me on a regular basis aren't able to vote in US elections...

Y'know, I'm shocked that you didn't rebel and become a stock broker or major in tax management or something.

They did a good job at not bashing my head in with rigid rhetoric. Overdoing it is what makes kids flip out and run for the border. My parents were a class act throughout my childhood.

However, I did have to develop a very high tolerance for historical documentaries and war movies.

Of course you love your family. I read your journal and I love your family.

I'll vote for Aragorn. Except I'm not American. But still! He can be Prime Minister too! I wonder if he speaks french... Probably not, hm? But then Tolkien was a linguist...

Your family is beautiful. Honestly. Can I help on the campaign? I did the political stuff first quint, I know how it goes...:) I can even call people I don't know without twitching...sort of.
Possibly Pippin and Merry together should share Homeland Security...*snerk* Seeing as they banded the Shire together so well. I agree that Eowyn would make a fantastic VP, maybe Eowyn and Faramir together--remember Aragorn did ask Faramir to be Steward as long as his line shall last, nevermind if there's king on the throne--so there's a nice relationship there already.
Wow. I'm actually thinking about this...incredible. I love being geekish...:)

Merry and Pippin as co-chairs of the Food and Drug Administration (or you could divide them between that and the Bereau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.)

And yes, Gandalf Stormcrow would make for a great overseas embassador, if you get my drift. (Wokka wokka wokka.) God knows that he could provide his own air transportation.

Theoden as head of the Cabinet of the Interior...Denethor as the chief of Homeland Security...

Faramir as Sec'y of State!
Because, um, yeah!!!
Treebeard could run the EPA.
Galadriel (if she weren't in the capital-W West) would run HUD!

Denethor for Homeland Security is PERFECT. He's a crazy, paranoid old barstard and seems to embody the current spirit of that branch.

Re: Faramir as Sec'y of State!
Erm.. but Denethor, with the flaming, and the leaping to his death, and the firey splatting, with the orcs all confused going, "wtf was THAT?".

In other words, I don't think Denethor is available.

No, we'll just have to make due with the former Iraqi Information Minister: "Mordor stands! There was no dawn, for men!"

Erm...
...you know, it's a scary thought, but I think my parents are eerily similar to yours. Not that my dad voted Aragorn for president after seeing Return of the King (on the same day you saw it, oddly enough), but he did begin constructing a proof of the theory that every movie ever made is secretly based on Lord of the Rings. Honestly. Even Sleeping Beauty.

Cool parents rock, huh?
